USB check and mount volume

I am looking for a solution for a problematic external USB drive that keeps going to sleep. I have a Seagate 1.5 TB drive that continues to unmount itself from my MacBook Pro, which is causing issues with Time machine backups. I am looking for something that will perform a check to make sure the drive is still mounted, and if it's mounted do-nothing. If it discovers that the drive is unmounted then mount the Time Machine volume.

I could continue to select mount volume and disk utility when I discover the volume has been unmounted, but there's got to be a better solution (automated). I have looked into using diskutil, but I'm not sure how to perform the check if mounted statement.

Thanks for any assistance,
— Don
