I think I figured out the culprit. I just updated to Office 2011 and from what I
gather the Word-based automator actions are installed with Office. I'm having a
hard time telling, though, whether the problem is that the new automator actions
were not installed or whether there's a bug in the new action. I think it's a
bug in the new action, it says version 1.2 but I can't find any info about
versions to tell if this is the new or old. I'll compare to a colleague's
computer with Office 2008 on Monday to see if I can figure this out.
Meanwhile, any suggestions on how to get around this error would be appreciated.
For instance any alternative ways to convert a batch of Word files into pdfs. I
tried recording my own action: opening a file, choosing "save as" and choosing
pdf, and saving. But when I try to run it even on a single file I get an error
and I'm not even sure if it would work on a batch of files, which is my whole
goal. I'm obviously not a very experienced user of Automator (just switched from
a pc to a mac).
Thanks,
MNH

Subject: Convert format of word documents to pdf suddenly not working
Hi,
I created a little workflow a month ago that converts a bunch of word documents
to pdf's. It has been working just fine, but suddenly today I got the following
message when I opened the workflow: "this workflow was saved with an older
version of the action 'convert format of Word documents.' Some behavior may have
changed".
Now when I run the workflow it opens the Word document, but then hits an error
saying "The object you are trying to access does not exist (-1728)". It creates
a file with the filename.pdf, but it's a corrupted file that I can't open as a
pdf. If I switch the action to create an RTF file instead it works just fine. I
also tried creating a new workflow with the action "convert format of Word
documents" assuming that this would be an updated version but it still gave me
the same error. If I open the file, choose print, and save as pdf it works fine
too, so there's nothing wrong with the file or the workflow, it's something
specific about the action of converting to a pdf.
Any advice would be greatly welcome, either how to fix this problem or an
alternative way to convert a bunch of Word documents to pdf's.
Thank you,
MNH
