How can I use Variables in the Find Mail Messages action

| I created a workflow that will search for mail messages with 3 parameters (Subject, and two items contained in the subject.
This allows me to get a result of all messages from John Doe with "need" and "help" in the subject line.
How can I do the same thing, replacing one or more subject line parameters with variables? I tried: - Ask for Text action (ask for Param1)
- Set Value of Variable (Setting result into Param1)
- Find Mail Messages (tried to place the variable in a field)
When I try to place the variable in the Subject Contains field, it fails to add it. If I use a different action like Take Video Snapshot, it will take the variable.
Am I doing something incorrectly, or using the wrong sequence of steps? Or is this not an option within this action?
