Well, then I've been lucky for a decade, while working daily with French, Japanese and English either in Terminal or in other native applications.
My experience has been pretty consistent over the years that Terminal works pretty well with all sort of input I feed it.

Yes, that is exactly what we are discussing. Automator creates a different composition. And as far as I can see from my experience in OSX, that's the first time a native Apple app messes with the input.
I've only started to use Automator a while ago and whatever I do, it messes the input. Since I can't find any other process on OSX that messes my input that way (and I have encoding issues with clients that send me weird stuff all the time, so I am quite familiar with standard workarounds), the only conclusion I can draw is that Automator does not work as expected.
If there is a workaround, I'm ready to take it right away. If there is a command line utility that I can run in "run shell script" that ensures the characters are not decomposed, I'd love it if someone could tell me what it is.
