Bev,

The Finder contextual menu is different in Snow Leopard. The easiest way to do this in Snow Leopard is to create a new workflow document in Automator, switch to Finder and select all of the files you want to rename, and then drag those files from Finder and drop them on the workflow window. That will create the same Get Specified Finder Items action shown on that tutorial page, so you'll be ready for Step 2.
