How to see spinning-gear progress indicator?

I apologize if this questions has been asked and answered many times before, but my archive searches return either nothing or errors. I'm pretty new to this automation thing but am impressed with the possibilities.
I have Lion installed on two macs. On one, I see a spinning gear in the menu bar, indicating that a workflow is running. On the other, I do not see the spinning gear or any other progress indicator. Is there a setting or preference somewhere to make the spinning gear appear in the menu bar as a progress indicator?
