If you're on a keyboard with media keys, it would be much easier to go
into keyboards and set them usable without the 'fn' key, then use
play/pause on f8.

If you need another application to see play/pause then, for some
versions of the software, you need to sigstop (man kill) itunes, or
the itunes helper.
