Do this without Automator. Photoshop has everything you need for this, self-contained. You can even import other people's actions. Or save an action as a Droplet. Very powerful, very under-used!

selection. That's the easiest way. You can record yourself making the
selection, adjust what you've recorded, save it, and then play it back.
You can apply the Action to a whole folder of images using the Batch
command, saving tons of time.
