Do this without Automator. Photoshop has everything you need for this, self-contained. You can even import other people's actions. Or save an action as a Droplet. Very powerful, very under-used!

Malcolm, I'm wondering why you wouldn't use a Photoshop Action to set the selection. That's the easiest way. You can record yourself making the selection, adjust what you've recorded, save it, and then play it back. You can apply the Action to a whole folder of images using the Batch command, saving tons of time.
