I.E., say I set an alarm for 10 AM, and start my morning work activities at 8 AM, using Word on desktop #1. At 10AM I want the application to switch to desktop #2, where I have a photo editing application open, or music or what ever, open to start working on it.

You're clouding the issue when you talk about switching to a specific space. By your own description, what you really want is to switch to a specific app. (You mention switching from Word to "a photo editing application, or music, or whatever".)

You switch to a specific application by sending it an activate message. Spaces will follow. (The space that shows is always the space containing the frontmost window of the active application.) If the application has multiple windows open, on multiple spaces, you can chose the window you want to be frontmost by setting its frontmost attribute to true (or by setting its index to 1). Again, whatever space that window is on becomes the visible space.

Put another way, focus is a property of windows (and therefore applications), not of spaces.
