Setting Keywords

I’m looking to set the keywords on image files with some method.   I mean ‘com.apple.metadata:kMDItemKeywords’.   I can do this from the command line in a complicated fashion using plists converted to binary and xattr.   There’s got to be a better way.

I see Automator actions for setting spotlight comments but that’s not what I want.

Can anyone point to resources on the subject of setting file metadata with Applescript or Automator?
