Hi Vik,
I presume that something running inside the shell was running with
-puppetstrings, and that automator was interpreting that output. For
examples, you could play with hdiutil, or any of the newer commands
that OSX runs under the hood of graphical interfaces.
I've never used it, because you need a PTY (pseudo-terminal) to get
real-time output, and only pipes are easy to set up in shells.
