Hi Michael.
This isn't an Automator answer - but you might try typing control-T which in most OS X text areas will transpose the characters on either side of the cursor.

While you're at it - try control-A and control-E which move to the beginning/end of the line.  Emacs-inspired key bindings like this work all over the place.
