Now it returns True if the bluetooth is there, but turned off.

This never used to respond at all for me, but now works correctly - so i think they changed something :)

I notice that the Apple BT File Exchange app knows if the BT module is powered-up - is there a new method that I have missed that reports the power state?

Have a look at IOBluetoothLocalDeviceGetPowerState.

I do have a supplementary question, though - does anyone know a way to enable or disable the BT module?
