Unexpected error return with BlueTooth RFComm sample

I'm using Apple's RFComm sample code and sometimes see an unexpected error

  "Error - failed to open the RFCOMM channel with error 00000004"

Any idea what error "4" might mean?

The typical sequence is the device fails to open because it is configured for exclusive access and another connection is already open. I sometimes see error 4 as my program tries to close out the previous connection and establish a new one.
