In my experience there is no consistent distance -- it varies greatly
between device pairings (i.e., host computer and mobile device
combinations). For instance, I recall an iPod touch was capable of
maintaining a connection with a Mac Pro after twisting around several
hallways in my office building, while a first-generation iPhone could
barely maintain a connection 10 meters outside my office. Changing the
host computer has similar effects on connection range.
I ended up hard-coding some maximum RSSIs for certain host
computer/mobile device combinations, but that's obviously kludgy
considering how many combinations there are.
