Hi Bluetooth folks,
We are debating between Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR vs. Bluetooth 4.0 LE for our app-enabled bluetooth accessory. I'd appreciate any insight you can share.
BTLE accessory -- Pros:
+ The Core Bluetooth framework is built on Bluetooth 4.0. This framework is supposed to be more powerful and simpler.
+ Longer battery life!
+ The current line-up of iOS devices (plus iPhone 4S) are already on Bluetooth 4.0.
BTLE accessory -- Cons:
- Slower data transfer rate... probably ok for my product.
- Not compatible with the older iOS devices (e.g. iPod Touch 4, iPad 2, iPad) which are on Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR.
Frankly, our biggest worry with Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR is its "shelf life" from Apple's standpoint. How much longer will future iOS devices be backward compatible with Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR accessories?
cheers,
Vincent
