Best way to re-connect to a peripheral?

One of the things I desperately need to fix this weekend is how my app re-connects to our peripheral. What's the best way to do this?

- If didDisconnect is called with an error (or maybe no error, but I didn't explicitly disconnect), just re-issue a connect? Will it eventually connect, when the peripheral comes back in range/online?

- Or should I set up a timer to time out and periodically re-issue the connect? How often should I attempt to reconnect?
