Don't get names during scanning on OS X, but do on iOS?

I'm trying to write a little OS X utility to help me explore the BLE peripherals we're developing. On iOS, we're able to find them and get their names from the advertisement data (usually the .name property is nil). But on OS X, it's all nil. What's up with that. Even allowing for duplicates (not necessary on iOS), I get names. Works in iOS simulator; does not seem to work on OS X. Latest-generation MacBook Pro 15".
