We're doing what Zach Dennis mentioned as well.

I understand Apple's design decision not to have an API to make pairing "transparent".
But in practice, to create the best UX the app needs to control when the pairing pop up comes up.
Reading a "dummy" protected characteristic is a work-around to that end.

We have done this by adding a public service/characteristic on our BLE device that is written to immediately before we try to connect for the first time and then is subscribed to, so when the device has an authenticated session it will notify the central device. Or, if authentication fails we'll notify the device.
