Eric,
Thanks for the links. Guess I was perhaps naive in hoping for a more practical and definitive answer than having to play lawyer reading federal regs and, most importantly, even then ending up with an indefinite answer. Note, for example, from the second, recent reference:
...the aircraft operator is solely responsible for determining which PEDs may be used on its aircraft. Each operator’s PED policy identifies what types of devices may be used during which phase(s) of flight
I realize that the situation is in flux, but I'm hoping that there is at least some consensus of opinion among the operators or overriding government regulation that would give us some practical and specific guidance in this situation. For example, how about the following as a strawman:
PEDs (Personal Electronic Devices) are restricted from use during taxi out, takeoff, ascent to altitude and final approach, but generally permitted otherwise (except for cellphone communication, which is prohibited throughout the flight).
This is my paraphrase of a recommendation from the FAA study, "A Report from the PED Aviation Rulemaking Committee to the FAA", Sep, 30, 2013. Most of this document appears to be a survey of what passengers are bringing on board and using (with or without permission) and a set of recommendations that deal with setting up testing procedures and advice for new avionics design, i.e., not much that deals with the current situation :-) Sigh....
What are the rest of you doing with regard to wearable BLE gadgets that may or may not be impacted by having to be shut down during some flight segments?
Mike
