In an off-email-list email Martijn told me he uses notifications on another characteristic to indicate a packet has been received. So you make sure there are always a certain number of packets in flight all the time. Based on the figures provided that would be 316 bytes.

Can you explain how you detect "number of packets in flight”?  I can see how you can track how many packets you have queued; but how can you know how many are done sending so you can queue the next set?  Are you making assumptions about the connection interval or are there API’s that Apple provides to inform you of the completion (other than using a write w/response which is too slow for our purposes)?
