What is the best to load a picture....

... that is not .tiff .jpeg or so...
In my case it is a gray level picture (4byte big endian values) with a resolution of about
1300 * 1200 pixels. The file itself has a header of 4096 bytes (should be ignored for now).
Is there any samplecode how to load and display this pictures?
