Well, not only did I read it wrong, I assumed you were right, too. And guess what? IT WORKS! Now, how do I display the data being sent? I used -vv but that didn't show me what I needed. I want to see the actual text being transmitted in a telnet session.

Ummm. Whoops. I should have read that more closely myself. It says 'excluding' the loopback interface. I don't think you can scan the loopback interface with tcpdump.
