Good day to all,
I just wanted to tell everyone (including Apple) how nice it is to be
able to write software without the fear of at best crashing the OS and
forcing a restart, or at worst, irreparably damaging the OS, and forcing
a reinstall.
Bad habits die hard, and I still find myself picking over my code with a
fine-toothed comb prior to running (even in the debugger), but
occasionally I remember what OS I'm running in and I fear as though a
great weight has been lifted.
Seriously, if you never had the joy of writing code (esp networking
code) on the Classic MacOS, it was possible to screw things up pretty
easily on a regular basis. Maybe it's just that I was a bad programmer,
but the knowledge that at any moment an unintended writing to address 0
could mean I'm suddenly staring at the little happy boot Mac guy was
funny enough to prompt a fellow programmer to refer to it as
Electro-Shock Programming.
Anyway, it's great to be away from that. Worse case (so far!) has been
that the program just didn't run, and I had to stare at the code closer
to find the bug. Sweeet.
Adios,
-Chilton
