Well, much of the mud has settled, the fog is lifting, and there does
indeed seem to be some light at the end of the long tunnel. I have two
of the four recommended schemes working for connecting custom menu items
to their intended actions! Enough for now; time to move on to new Cocoa
conundrums. No doubt I'll plough into one shortly. Thanks to all who
helped. One final note, however: this all could have been learned, by
me or just about anyone else, with a simple QuickTime animation showing
the various ways this stuff works. Hell, I bet 90% of Cocoa could be
taught quickly, and with much less confusion and frustration, with such
a tool. Get a couple guy/gals transferred temporarily from Pixar and
Cocoa would soon be in a class by itself--not that it isn't already.
All the smart but easily confused folks like me would save months of
work, hardly anyone would drop out due to frustration, and the next
generation of programmers would be "owned" by Apple from the gitgo. At
least until Billy Boy's minions stole the idea--and based on past
performance of them getting a clue that would still give Cocoa and Apple
a 2-3 year head start. Oh, and while we're at it I like to win the
lottery, too.
