Just my 0.02 EUR.

in a past life, I used to feed mailing list into local newsgroups on
my newsserver and used newsreaders to read and search articles.
Depending on the mailing lists/topics, i would set different
expiration policy. Some were never expired. Very robust and quick.

And, um, this still can be done using Mailman. It's got an option to feed
mailing list posts to a newsgroup and vice versa. I've never experimented
with it, but it sounds rather interesting...

IMHO, it's a far superior way instead of trying to coerce mailing systems which are meant for on-to-one or one-to-few. News provide faster threaded access than any alternatives I've seen. Reading, you only see the messages that are new unless you ask to see them all. I could go through messages using news about 10 times faster than with a mailing list. Many readers provide excellent filtering/sorting/killing to make the reading more efficient. I've even toyed with the idea of setting up such a system privately just to be more efficient at reading the many mailing list I'm subscribed too.
