Global keyboard events

Does anyone know of how to listen to global keyboard events? I.e. more
system level keyboard events, like the volume keys that work for any
application? I looked at the docs but found no useful information. The
only thing I found was a Carbon call RegisterEventHotKey, which allows
you to register a global hot key. But even in that case only one such
combination can exist. Any ideas? Is this possible to achieve?

Thanks
Alex
