This is definitely not good.
This implies that there is someone on these lists who are taking the names
of posters to the mail lists, and forging them onto the petition.
This is not just ethically scummy, but, I tend to believe, that as soon as
People Inside Apple see this message, you have guaranteed that you've lost
any chance anyone will pay attention to the petition. Might as well shut it
down, folks. It's over.
But beyond that, I don't consider this just ethically scummy, I consider
this a serious breach of the usage rules for e-mail addresses on my mailing
lists. If I find out the identity of the person who did this, that person
will be immediately and permanently banned from all mailing lists I control.
I consider this a serious security breach.
Hopefully, that makes my position on stuff like this clear. If you're the
person who did this, I suggest you apologize to John (for hosing his
petition) and Ondra immediately, and contact me as well. If I hear from you
first, there's a chance of leniency from me depending on what you say. If I
find out through other means, you're toast.
Hopefully, that's fairly unambiguous about how *I* feel about this.

Well, although the metadata supporters might think that this is a nice way
