I thought the same thing, but after playing around with it, I see that it *does* work under OSX, but it appears to require that you hold down the control key *at the same time* you hold down the other keys, instead of afterwards, when you move the mouse around, which is how it used to work.

This only works in Classic apps and only if the first mouse click (starting
the selection) hits a Classic window. It does not work in Carbon or Cocoa
apps.
