So I'm asking --- am I the only person who misses the color black?

Actually it's still there, just not very often. If I use Pixie and
look at the pixels in a Finder window I see a wide variety of
shades from complete black to very nearly white. (Rez: 1280x1024
default font sizes). It just depends where the glyph (font
character) is subpixel positioned AND the size of the pixel.
If a pixel is larger than the size of the glyph line (e.g. "1"
vertical downstroke), than the glyph line can not completely darken
your pixel and you will have the impression of grayness. (Solution:
increase font size)
The fonts are not "gray" by themselves.
