Getting internet connection.

I am making an application and would like to do two things:

1. Get the device the user uses to connect to the internet (be able to tell if its Ethernet, or a Modem)

2. Find out if they are connected to the internet, so I don't try to make a network connection.

Are either of these possible on OS X?
