I tried sending a SIGHUP to the finder to get it to restart - hoping that
instead of tearing down everything it would re-read its config files and
reset the desktop picture. Didn9t work. The finder would still effectively
quit and re-load.

If I were you I'd wait for Apple to fix their Appearance Manager. The
setting the config file and restarting the finder hack is a real pain in the
neck.
