But why not? The user is entitled to good user interface feedback. Turning the wait cursor off seems like a bad idea.

Any way to shut it off?

I haven't checked lately, but back when a Display Postscript window server ruled, it controlled the wait cursor automatically! After a certain period of unresponsiveness (3 seconds?) of the thread that communicates with the window server, the window server changed the cursor to the wait cursor, No need for the programmer to have to deal with this in code as under Windows (and probably Mac OS). This is a great feature that probably can't be shut off.
