Look at points 9 -> 12 at the top of page 135. There are connections both
ways between the DotView and the color well and slider. This is the first
place you make connections between elements in a window and it's easy to
miss something.

That was it. I did the same thing as Troy--instantiated the DotView class and made the connections to the instance rather than to the actual view object in the window. Once I made the connections directly in the window, everything worked.
