There is a longer and more useful explanation in the release notes from PB4,
I think it was, but the signature of the method changed again a little bit
in Public Beta and the NSPanel reference document hasn't caught up with that
last change.
Also, most or all of the available documentation (including the Learning
Cocoa book) have the purposes of the "alternate" and "other" buttons
backwards. The "other" button is the one that always appears
second-from-right whether you have a two- or three-button panel.
