Case in point: the Lighthouse apps, some of the best products available
for the NeXT platform got ported to Java at Sun. The results sucked so
bad that they'll never see the light of day again. If *Sun* can't make
a desktop app in Java that doesn't suck, then who can?
Second case in point; the Corel office suite: Ported to Java, abandoned
after millions were spent trying to make their performance acceptable.
Java has its place. It's the perfect language for writing Java
benchmarks and demos. Also, it did do us the service of showing just
how desperate the world was for a C++ replacement.
