Well, *owning* a book about C doesn't make a C-programmer!

I think the bigger difficulty is that knowledge of the language doesn't always make a difference, because there's other things involved as well. Such as knowledge of the tools, and knowledge of how to use your programming knowledge in the context of your operating system.
It took me weeks to get my simplest C programs ported from MSVStudio to CodeWarrior sometimes, because I didn't know how CodeWarrior worked (I still don't :)

So, learn C, yes. But if you can, learn it in the context of use on _any_ system, not Windows or Mac OS specifically. Learning it in the context of UNIX systems should work.
