Hiliting an NSToolbarItem (the "Current" selection)?

I'm trying to make an NSToolbar behave similarly to System
Preferences.app by hiliting the currently selected/active item in
the toolbar. The rectangle holding the icon of the toolbar is
darkened. I don't find any APIs in NSToolbarItem to do this. Do I
have to make a custom view, or am I missing something?
