Drawing shadow

Hi,

I'd like to draw gradient shadow around card in my card game. While it is possible by applying an pre-saved, alpha-transparent image or hard-coding it, I'd like to know what's the other option supported by built-in capability of OS-X. There should be some built-in drawing functions which will ease this kind of thing because OS-X' finder heavily use it in drawing edge of windows.
