I tried doing this just for the purpose of having more sounds to choose
from. Unfortunately all of my aiff that I converted were actually of a
different type than the one that the system wanted to use. I forced the
system into using them by changing their codes from aiff to aifc and
they worked well as alert sounds but once I was in mail or some other
cocoa app that used sounds they ran into the same problem as you did. I
am not sure exactly the difference between aiff and aifc but that seems
to create the problem.
