Fonts - type 1

Can these be used?

If so, what file(s) need to be installed: pfa, pfb, afm, ...?

And, can the fonts be accessed by character number, and
reencoded? What about T1 fonts and Unicode?

I have looked some, but I guess in the wrong spots. I'm building
up to trying to use this stuff in Cocoa, but can't even get started
with installing them to fool around . . .
