There is a nice long discussion of this from about 2 months ago on the macosx-dev list on omnigroup.com. Check the archives there for multiple contrasting viewpoints and positions from the field.

Hi,

Frequently while using Cocoa I run into situations where I would like to make slight modifications to how things work in the AppKit classes. In these cases it would be nice to be able to view the source code for the AppKit as a reference.

So... my request is for Apple to make the source code available (not open source), just as a reference.

This is probably a futile request but I thought I'd throw it onto this list since it is an issue that I'm sure a lot of other developers have thought about.
