If you know the device number, then you can use

getmntinfo


Yes, but there's no guarantee, as there was in classic MacOS, that there's a user-friendly name at all. You might be expecting "londo" or "delenn" (two of my classic volume names) but the hard disk name for my MacOS X volume is in fact "".

Like I said, it's a different paradigm.
