Why would this be a "downside"? Isn't it nice to be informed about what will happen if you double-click a file in advance?

The only way to provide this information while hiding the extension in the Finder would be that the Finder always displays an icon with the same information (so that in effect you have a "graphic" extension). This would mean that you have a visually clearly discernible icon for "every" possible extension in the world. This is clearly impossible, but maybe you can fall back in such cases on a "generic" doc icon that has the unknown extension written in it (though it will be hard to make this readable for the very small icons in List View and Browser View). Then the problem still remains how to tell extensions from files without an extension, but a dot in their name...
