Thanks Mike (and everybody else) for explaining the situation. I had read the NSMutableArray documentation, but skipped over NSArray, which is where they discussed this. The reason I attempted to subclass NSMutableArray is that I wanted to model a PhotoAlbum, which is, in a sense, a specialized NSMutableArray. I am now doing what Marco suggested, and that works just fine.
