I just picked up a copy of this a few days ago, and must say I agree with
your sentiments about it; it was a big disappointment (although to be fair,
Amazon is not to blame here, in fact you could have researched readers'
comments about the author's earlier works.) Very little substance, with a
large amount of unimportant or obvious information.
It feels like the author has simply recycled some material from earlier
books (even if I wanted to read about the early history of C++, there are
much better sources) and added what amounts to a novice developer's level of
experience with Cocoa and Carbon. It's also annoying that every source code
snippet is given twice--once in Java and again in Objective C--even when the
code is utterly trivial (e.g. string constants). It appears that author
chose to do this to try to reach the largest possible market, at the expense
of readability.
I'm hoping the source code to the book's sample application (Diary) contains
some useful nuggets, but unfortunately the author's web site just says "The
source code for the book is on its way and will be posted shortly." Sigh.
