I also found the Core Foundation XML services lacking. I am curently
working with Xerces from www.apache.org.
Their C++ version has a PB framework project in the Projects/MacOS
directory. The source Installed great except for the 32 char name
problem that I do not understand. I just rename all the long stuff in
finder. Nice way to bounce around the source code.
I could not get it to work from Cocoa. I read about smart pointers.
However I was not up to the task. The Xerces group may take on the
Object-C interface. I hope so.

In the meantime, I switched to using Xerces-Java. That has worked
well. I do not under stand the Apple Java-Obj-C bridge yet. Maybe I
can get that to work.

Thinking about this started me to think about what Cocoa development
means. Why should Apple create a whole new API for XML? Why not just
use Xerces. Is that not the idea of reuse and open software?
