No there isn't though this is a requested feature and we are considering it.

Otherwise, what is the recommend layout? (Find dialogs are quite similar,
but have cosmetic differences among Apple applications)

See sample code in /Developer/Examples/AppKit/TextEdit for example of layout and code to handle it. You'll see both TextEdit and Mail use the same layout but Project Builder has a slight variation to include a "Whole Word" checkbox.
