Folks,

Not a solution, but just an idea. Long long time ago there was a class MiscMatrix (part of the MiscKit) that was in some extend solving the problem. The last time I contributed to this class (6 years ago!) it was still not bug-free solution, but you might get some ideas from the sources. Check http://www.misckit.com/ for more. Hope this helps a bit.
