I made a small example one year ago with this kind of things:
transparent view, not square and overlapped, and it does work very well,
this is a screen shot of it, the view move in their superview and are
copy able by dragging:

[demime 0.98b removed an attachment of type image/jpeg which had a name of Picture 1.jpg]
I can give the code for free, it is very experimental...
